The Brazilian Symposium on Databases is the official database event of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) and the largest venue in Latin America for presentation and discussion of research results in the database domain. The 28th edition of the symposium (SBBD 2013) was held in the city of Recife, in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, from September 30th to October 3rd.

Paper submissions were organized into two independent tracks: full papers and short papers. The full paper review process was integrated with the Journal of Information and Data Management (JIDM), in the sense that the papers accepted for presentation at SBBD 2013 were published in the October 2013 issue of JIDM. A total of 40 full papers were submitted, out of which 21 were accepted for oral presentation in technical sessions and publication in JIDM. The short papers review process accepted papers to be presented as posters in an interactive session and also selected some papers to be orally presented in technical sessions and to be re-submitted in an extended version to be published in the February 2014 issue of JIDM. A total of 69 short papers were submitted, out of which 23 were accepted for presentation as posters and 6 were accepted for oral presentation. Altogether, SBBD 2013 received 109 submissions from 11 countries, out of which 50 were accepted, which represents an overall acceptance rate of 46%.

Along with technical sessions, SBBD 2013 also promoted a Demos and Applications Session and a Thesis and Dissertation Workshop as co-located events. A total of 21 papers were submitted to the Demos and Applications Session, out of which 10 were accepted. As for the Thesis and Dissertations Workshop, it selected 14 papers for presentation.

SBBD 2013 offered three tutorials. The two national tutorials were: (i) Solid-State Disks: How Do They Change the DBMS Game?, by Angelo Brayner (Universidade de Fortaleza, Brazil) and Mário Nascimento (University of Alberta, Canada); and (ii) Computação em Nuvem para Ciência: o Papel Fundamental da Área de Bancos de Dados, by
Marta Mattoso (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Daniel de Oliveira (Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brazil). The international tutorial Querying Data Through Ontologies was presented by Andrea Cali (University of London, United Kingdom).

SBBD 2013 also had three short courses, with a special focus on computer science undergraduate students, as detailed as follows: (i) Análise em Big Data e um Estudo de Caso utilizando Ambientes de Computação em Nuvem, by Ticiana L. C. da Silva, Flávio R. C. Sousa, José Antônio F. de Macêdo and Javam C. Machado - Universidade Federal do Ceará, Brazil; (ii) Introdução à Mineração de Opiniões: Conceitos, Aplicações e Desafios, by
Karin Becker and Diego Costa Tumitan - Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; and (iii) Modelagem Conceitual de Bancos de Dados Geográficos: Modelo OMT-G, by Bruno Rabello Monteiro (Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto, Brazil) and Clodoveu A. Davis Jr. (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil).

Finally, SBBD 2013 included three invited talks proffered by outstanding keynote speakers. The national invited talk, entitled Mineração de Dados: Modelos, Algoritmos, Sistemas e Aplicações, was proffered by the national researcher honored at SBBD 2013: Wagner Meira Jr. (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais). The international invited talks were: (i) Challenges and Opportunities with Big Data, by H. V. Jagadish (University of Michigan); and (ii) Data Management Challenges for Social Applications, by Johannes Gehrke (Cornell University and Microsoft).

SBBD 2013 was the result of the collective effort of a large community, which we gratefully acknowledge. We thank the local organization committee and the symposium chairs who worked hard to guarantee an outstanding symposium. We are also grateful to the Steering Committee members for their help, advice and support. Further, we thank the program committee members and external reviewers who provided high quality reviews for the submitted papers. Finally, we are grateful to the authors who submitted their papers to SBBD 2013.
